3 Lessons Learned as a Young Activist

I am by no means a “pro” at this stuff. I am still dipping and treading into the path of battling racism and really just found my channel to do it. But here are a few things I have picked up to still remain sane:

1. Don’t watch and read things that will get you upset- Meaning: please don’t watch videos like “I Hate Black Women Because” “Gays are Going to Hell” “Women are Whores”. If you know ignorance is present from the title, save your brain cells.

2. A lot of people will not care and see you as “doing too much”. You know where that comes from, but explaining that to them will most likely not change their thinking. I constantly was debating and debating with other Black folks who feel that we truly do live in a post racial society, while being just fine with the injustices that happen to their own people because “hood people” aren’t them. They are special, smiling, amicable Uncle Toms (sarcasm) , but yet they feel they have just as much privilege as the next guy. And you know what? I’m tired of talking to them. I just want to discuss with people who are down for the cause, if you not. *SHRUG*

3. The above being said. Rally around other positive people. That way you can have your energy built up and not feel like human kind has no hope. This typically happens when you become a social media activist and not actually GO to events. Facebook arguing gets me no where and I am very guilty of it. My page looks like a Black Panther editorial, I think I made my point. Now that I made my point, I can build off of that. I still post but I am doing real projects as well with organizations. I use my skills to help others. That is how I keep going.

To My Hometown Lynchburg, VA-Jesus Never Told Me To Vote Republican

Jesus preached forgiveness and love. He preached following God and in return being fulfilled with happiness and joy and peace; even when things seem to be going down hill…Have Faith. Jesus gave me hope and peace beyond what man could give me. Then I go home this past weekend and go to church with my family….and the pastor (the son of Jerry Fallwell, one of the founders of the Moral Majority) takes joy in the recent “Ultrasound Bill” and the whole church applauded. And I sat there in my seat cringing. Because people were applauding a bill that takes further advantage of women’s health and truly thought it was about saving babies. This bill allows doctors to with hold information from pregnant women…even if it’s life threatening for the child and the mother. Thus bill is about power and control….not about morals. But don’t tell that to someone back home because they have completely twisted and intertwined Christianity with Republican. You can’t speak out against being a Republican, people say “homosexuals” with the upmost disgust, and you can’t be simply friends if you aren’t saved.<—-Sounds a lot like intolerance and judgement to me. It saddens me that my nephew thinks that being Gay is worse than any other sin that can be done. There are corrupt people in charge, women’s rights are in danger, children dying in the streets….AND WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT GAY PEOPLE??? The real irony is that I was born in the most conservative town in VA and ended up as a radical. Jesus often questioned authority and rules in the Bible when it came to man made power, and I feel I should follow that example. So I can at least say I tried to shine some light into this world. I feel you can spread Jesus a lot quicker with Love than with Hate.
